What are the risks children face in the Internet?
There are several different ways that kids can get into trouble on the internet, some affect the entire family financially, socially and emotionally. They are using the Internet as a priviledge, not a right. You are entit led to protect them whether they are on the street or at home. You prepare them to cross the street. You ask where they are going when they are outdoors, as they sit in front of the computer you are entitled to know where they are and what they are doing.
The risks include:
Accessing inappropriate information or values:
porn, hate, intolerance, bigotry, gore, violence, hoaxes, misinformation and hype
Becoming victims: of luring, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, harassment, pornographers, pedophiles, with deep the psychological scarring that ensues
Being lured into committing these illegal activities on friends, enemies or strangers
Giving our private information, providing financial disclosures, or PIN to strangers
Being targets of irresponsible marketers, pornographers, pedophiles, and vulgar images on typosquat or porn-napped sites
Being scammed and defrauded.

How can I prevent cyberbullying and abuse?
Have students use Avatars , rather than photos of themselves.
Send the offensive e-mail to the ISP: i.e. Yahoo Terms of Agreement Policy
I use a site meter, which tells me which domain ISPs have visited my web page. It is just a little piece of information that might help me. It gives students a good idea of who might be accessing their sites. see: Site Meter |
How Teachers Can Help
1. Use a computer Lab setup that allows you to view all student's screens, or use a monitoring device.
2. Be familiar with your Board’s online Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) .
3. Create a classroom AUP in a cooperative learning class activity.
4. Discourage the participation of young children in chat room activities at home.
5. Discuss what happens in such situations. Ask the students what they have experienced. Most will tell you stories that teach peers.
6 . Teach older children what to do in dangerous situations.
7. Teach children to be aware that people can misrepresent themselves
8 . Discuss Internet activities and let them know that you are there if they need you.
9 . Report any suspected illegal content or activity.
10. Teach children to forego online information registration
forms or lie about their identifiying information.
1. Place the computer in the family room or other visible area, not in child’s bedroom.
2. Use gender-neutral screen names.
3. Talk to children about Internet safety and participate with them online. If they know more than you, let them teach you.Start when they are young.
4. Children shouldn’t believe anything said to them over the Net from an unknown source.
5. Tell children they do not have to respond to messages sent to them, whether by e-mail or instant message.
6. Children should never give out personal information, screen names, passwords or credit card information online.
7. Use a good virus detection program.
8. Supervise children’s computer usage. Don’t rely on filtering software to do the work.
9. Check the history function of your browser to see which websites your children have visited.
10. Know who your children are communicating with online. Get to know their online friends just as you would their other friends.
11. Promote an environment where your children can talk openly with you.
